Pooram pronounced [puːɾam] is an annual festival, which is celebrated in temples dedicated to goddesses Durga or Kali held especially in Valluvanadu area and other adjoining parts of north-central Kerala (Present Palakkad, Thrissur and Malappuram districts) after the summer harvest. Harimattom pooram is the one of the famous pooram in Ernakulam. An example of a famous pooram is Thirumandhamkunnu Pooram which has an active participation of 11 Lakh people across the country. Most pooram festivals have at least one ornately decorated elephant being paraded in the procession taken out of the temple precincts. However, there are some well known poorams, such as Anthimahakalankavu Vela, Chelakkara, Aryankavu Pooram at shoranur Palakkad and Machad mamangam near Wadakkanchery that do not use the caparisoned elephant, instead go for stilted mannequins of horses or bullocks. Kerala which is often referred to as 'God's Own Country' has many Hindu temples. Many of the temples have unique traditions and most hold festivals on specific days of the year. Temple festivals usually continue for a number of days. AYYAPPAN VILAKKU IS A POPULAR RITUAL ORGANISED IN TEMPLES AS WELL AS HOUSES AND COMMON PLACES TO PLEASE AND GET THE BLESSINGS OF LORD AYYAPPA. The whole day ritual includes craftsmanship, Bhajan, procession etc. This is conducted during the main pilgrimage season of Sabarimala. The artists are trained professionals. By dawn the artists create miniature temples for the deities Lord Ayyappan, Lord Vavar, the Muslim warrior who became a close friend, Goddess Bhagavathy etc. using the stem of banana plant and tender fronds of the coconut tree. After installation of the deities, the main programme is a ritual procession in the late afternoon, ladies carrying lamp, drum beats and Udukkukotti pattu (folksongs) etc. In some places Panchavadyam (traditional orchestra with five musical instruments), caparisoned elephants will be the added attractions. The ritualistic dance performance by oracles (velichappadukal) in accordance with the rhythmic drum beats of Chenda and Udukku is the most spectacular show of this event.By night Ayyappan Pattu begins. Ayyappan Pattu is the Udukkukottipattu, where a group of singers narrate the story of Lord Ayyappan through folksongs. This will continue for two-three hours. After midnight another ritual procession with Thalappoli, is held similar to that in the evening. After this Thiri uzhichil (anointing the body of the performer with a wick lighted with vegetable oil), fire walk,symbolic fight between Ayyappan and Vavar and their reunion are performed.
